Sometimes referred to as grand plaisance, luxury yachting, professional yachting, super-yachts or mega-yachts for the largest vessels, yachting characterises the use of vessels over 18-20 metres in length, which deploy for a very small number of occupants a high level of on-board services and technical services provided by professional crew on board. Yachting is aimed at ship owners, who entrust their vessel to an intermediary, to rent it to individuals or companies for leisure or business purposes.

Nearly 6,000 yachts are registered worldwide. Half of them criss-cross the shores of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and Corsica, with Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes and Monaco as flagship destinations.
